If you want to get fit or if you are looking to embark on a new fitness routine you may want to make these considerations:
- Lots of people join the gym in January but don’t sustain it.
- We get told over and over again the benefits of an exercise programme.
Even if you regularly use the gym, this article may help you re-evaluate what you are doing and push things on.
If you want it to work and work well, ask yourself…
- What physical activities do I enjoy?
- Do I prefer group or individual activities?
- What programs best fit my schedule?
- Do I have physical conditions that limit my choice of exercise?
- What goals do I have in mind? (For example, weight loss, strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, or mood enhancement)
Once you have considered these you can start thinking about what exercise to participate in. Yes, we can run or join a gym but what do you truly like?
Alternatively, sometimes choosing the hard route can make you feel even more reward.
Most importantly, have a plan and make it six weeks. We have always found that six weeks can help you really feel the difference.
Make sure that after six weeks you reassess what you are doing. Go back to the first section and repeat the questions. This will help you ensure the regimen is still right for you and will motivate you when you realise it is.
If it isn’t right, start making the changes and create your next six-week plan.
Now let’s remind ourselves of some of the benefits again.
Regular exercise has been proven to:
- Reduce stress
- Ward off anxiety and feelings of depression
- Boost self-esteem
- Improve sleep
Exercise also has these added health benefits:
- It strengthens your heart
- It increases energy levels
- It lowers blood pressure
- It improves muscle tone and strength
- It strengthens and builds bones
- It helps reduce body fat
- It makes you look fit and healthy
Look at that list – plenty of reasons to adhere to your plan. Every six weeks look at this list too and pick out what is a must for you. Which of those benefits is something you must have over these next six weeks. It can’t be one you would quite like. You MUST have that benefit for those 6 weeks, that is when you will really feel the results happening.
You will know that you are doing the exercise that is right at a time that is right giving you what you must have.
This is your personal training article. This is what we do with clients every six weeks. Don’t judge yourself, don’t be too harsh on yourself, just regroup and kickstart your next six weeks!
