When lockdown began lots of people embarked on a home training fitness journey.
Using your own body and simple pieces of equipment found at home, such as a chair or a step can be an effective way to exercise, especially when mixed with some walking or running for cardiovascular (CV) training.
Some bodyweight exercises that are great for home training are press ups, squats, mountain climbers and crunches. Lots of you may already be doing them now. However, all these exercises will be made safer and will be more effective if you are following our ergonomic advice and postural stretches.
These are great exercises as they recruit lots of big muscle groups, helping you not only build muscle but also to burn calories during and after your training. These big muscles such as the chest, quadriceps (thighs), shoulders and core need smaller and muscles and tendons to be strong to support them, otherwise, it can lead to injuries.
A good guideline would be to exercise using these big muscles 3-4 times per week giving them time to recover in between training days. It’s fine to do CV training most days and we will cover a training plan for this in future weeks but try to have one day a week where you rest. Remember, when you exercise you are damaging your body and when it repairs you get the results; so, rest is good!
So now let’s hope you see our weekly videos not only as a way to keep injury-free, but as the platform for all of your other exercise. Your strength starts on the inside, so start building now by taking a few minutes each day to stretch, breathe and strengthen.
